About Us

Akro-Plastics was established in 1987 through a joint venture between Jerry Ramsey and another gentleman who had the unfortunate problem of having designed a rotational molding machine that he could not market. His dilemma was he could not build one without selling it and he could not sell one without building it.

Mr. Ramsey, with his interest in plastics, saw the potential of rotational molding and undertook the endeavor of personally erecting one of these machines in a small facility in Akron, for manufacturing and so that it could be marketed. Within a short period of time he found a customer in need of a molder for PVC Aquatic dock bumpers.  Knowing very little about rotational molding this was a great challenge but one Jerry met head on and with great enthusiasm.

Soon thereafter another opportunity arose, this time for dock floats. The potential customer had no tooling or molder to work with, just an idea. Jerry took it upon himself to design a float that evening and visited the customer in southern Ohio the very next morning to present his proposal and CAD drawings. The customer was so impressed with the initiative Jerry had shown that he released him then and there to have tooling built and starts molding floats.

Akro-Plastics today is a custom Rotational molder located in Kent, Ohio. Since that first machine Akro-Plastics has grown and now operates 3 bi-axial rotational molding machines, 1 bi-axial shuttle machine and one rock ‘n oven molding machine. These machines allow Akro to mold product ranging in size from 4 ½” speaker boxes to well tanks or other items as large as 8’ (diagonal dimension) by 22’ in length. Our product lines range from polyethylene playground equipment, water sumps, parts for lawn maintenance equipment to containers molded with FDA approved polyethylene dispensers.

Using custom cooling fixtures and holding jigs we are proud to say that we hold some of the tightest tolerances in the industry. We have two 5 axis CNC routers for secondary cutting and trimming. We have assisted in the design of several products that are molded as a single unit, collage, and after machining and finishing produce as many as 7 different parts. Our finishing department takes great pride in producing very clean pieces and parts as well as fully assembled finished product. We have 800,000 square foot of floor space under roof and have the capability to direct ship or drop ship anywhere in the world.

We continually to strive to be one of the best molders in the rotational business and often set our sights on project others shy away from. Our quality department is next to none. Computer on the floor supply pictorial explanations of process parameters, visual finishing definitions, work instructions, etc (see Quality section).
